CAAA New Horizons Digital Bulletin: July 2021

CAAA New Horizons Digital Bulletin: July 2021 Edition
New Horizons Digital Bulletin:
July 2021
So far, the summer of 2021 has not been what we had all hoped for. The dry and hot conditions here have been relentless. Unfortunately, rain is the only thing that can help save what is left of this year’s crops. The wildfires in northern Saskatchewan have sent smoke across the prairies and helped block some sun for a few days. The smoke presents its own set of challenges, and it is important that we all remember it’s not a “normal” flying condition. The smoke can roll in and out just like fog. It can catch you off guard at anytime and can hide in coming weather, as well as obstacles.
As an association we are aware of the water volume issue operators are facing with Canadian requirements being different than other countries around the world. At this time, we would like to remind our members that registered product labels must be followed and off-label use could result in a monetary fine from Health Canada’s Pesticide Compliance Program (PCP) as outlined in the Pest Control Products Act (PCPA) and its Regulations. The CAAA has received a letter from CropLife Canada as a reminder to the importance of always reading and following label instructions.

As an association we have met with registrants to discuss the water volume requirements in Canada. We are actively working with Bayer in doing field testing at different water volumes. Making changes to registered labels is not a quick fix and until such time all label instructions must be adhered too.

Portage Aircraft AMOC
Portage Aircraft maintenance is please to announce the introduction of a blanket Alternative Method of Compliance (AMOC) for (AD) 2021-05-14. The AD, which was introduced earlier this year, applies to all Air Tractor models in Canada. The current revision of the AD requires the removal and paint stripping of the flap torque tube for liquid penetrant inspection.

Our AMOC is an in-situ eddy current inspection that can be completed in approximately one hour. Our inspection requires no disassembly of the flight controls or paint removal. For more details please contact Portage Aircraft at 204-857-4151.
AAAA Report
Sorry to mention that this season has not been very good for most operators and farmers in Alberta. Wide spread drought conditions persist in the majority of the province and its looking like there will be some complete crop failures in the dryland areas. Some of the irrigated crops are having a tough time with the extended extreme high temperatures in Southern Alberta, potatoes are having a tough time developing tubers and canola are being blasted. If an operator does have some spraying to accomplish, they’re being hindered by forest fire smoke from Northern Saskatchewan and BC. Visibility on the ground has been variable from 10 miles down to ½ mile in smoke. The challenge is deciding when its safe to fly as the smoke sometimes come in waves of variable thicknesses.

On a lighter note, the 4A’s are changing their venue for 2021’s annual conference, we’re going to hold it in Lethbridge at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel & Conference Center. After decades of trekking to Red Deer every November for the conference, I hope I remember to turn left and not right when leaving the hanger for the conference.
