CAAA New Horizons Digital Bulletin: March 2021

Introducing the CAAA New Horizons Digital Bulletin
For those who do not know me, I am Chad Vanderbyl. Together with my wife Kendra and our three children Parker, Hudson, and Boedy we own and operate Fly’n Dutchman Ag. Currently, I am going into my thirteenth year of spraying out of Melfort, Saskatchewan. I have been a member of the CAAA board since 2017. It has been such an honour to be selected as President of our association. I plan to work hard to maintain the legacy and the long-standing reputation of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association.

Recently, our association organized our first-ever CAAA Virtual Conference. With over 100 participants, we had a better-than-expected turnout. A huge thank you to all our great sponsors. Without them, we would not have the association we have.

Forest Protection Limited (FPL) has been an integral part of the Canadian Aviation landscape for 69 years. The staff have helped keep the forests safe from pest outbreaks and played an important role through the provision of Aerial Firefighting in almost every province in Canada over the course of the corporation’s history. Our incredible team of aviators makes our company proud, and we thought we should celebrate the occasion by interviewing one of our most seasoned veterans and one of our up-and-coming pilots about their experiences in aerial application aviation. What follows is a series of questions and answers between Steven Hansen, FPL’s Managing Director, and Eric Bradley, who has been associated with FPL in one form or another since 1976, plus Dan Robb, who joined the FPL ranks as an AME in 2012 and worked his way into a pilot role by 2018.

At the recent CAAA Annual General Meeting, the Members of the association voted in a new CAAA Executive.

CAAA 2021 AGM, Conference, & Trade Show Recap
We would like to thank our generous sponsors, exhibitors, presenters, and attendees for making the 2021 CAAA Virtual AGM, Conference & Trade Show a huge success. The virtual platform allowed the CAAA to maintain all elements of an in-person conference from the delivery of education sessions to visiting with exhibitors. We had over 110 attendees over the two days and the program offered 8 educational credits! In the virtual Exhibit Hall attendees were also able to visit with the 12 exhibitors through chat or live stream. The virtual silent auction was also a great success with a few bidding wars on several items. Thank you to all who donated!

Did you miss attending the 2021 CAAA Virtual AGM, Conference & Trade Show? If you missed the conference and would like to attend any of the sessions, with the Exception o the PAASS program, please contact the CAAA office to be registered and receive information on how to access the virtual platform. Credits can still be awarded post conference for all sessions except for the PAASS program. If you did attend the conference you will be able to access the platform until March 3, 2022. All session videos are available along with all exhibitor information in the Exhibit Hall.

Congratulations to all 2021 award winders and scholarship recipients. It is an honour to be nominated and recognized by your peers.

Thank you again to all attended. We look forward to seeing everyone in person in Montreal in 2022. Have a prosperous 2021 season and fly safe!
The CAAA office received a letter from Health Canada, Pesticide Compliance Program about the importance of following pesticide label directions. Specifically, this letter outlines situations where applicators are using lower water volumes than stated on pesticide labels as well as what application equipment is approved for aerial application.

The full letter is available for review below.

During the Environmental Fate session at the recent CAAA Conference, Andrea Sawatzky spoke to this topic. Log in to the Virtual Conference platform to view the full presentation.
